The Different Uses and Types of Crushed Stone Produced in the US

January 21, 2022

The United States uses a large amount of raw material every year to build and improve properties and structures. Materials like stone are in high demand and can be used to create retaining walls, paths, buildings, and more. Crushed stone is another material that we often use in the US for various purposes, particularly for underground projects as an aggregate. If you want to learn more about what crushed stone is used for, keep reading.

What Is Crushed Stone?

Crushed stone is much what it sounds like: larger stones that have been crushed into smaller parts to be used for various other purposes. Crushed stone can be made from a wide range of stone types including tap rock and recycled rock. It is helpful to look at a breakdown of the different types of crushed stone that were produced in the United States in 2019. According to the USGS, in 2019, crushed stone was made from 69% limestone and dolomite, 15% granite, 6% traprock, 5% miscellaneous stone, 3% sandstone, and a remaining 2% that was mixed stones.

Mixed stones typically come from construction projects, mines and quarries, recycling, and more and can be used for a wide range of different projects as well down the road. Crushed stone can be used for landscaping, as fill rock, the base for concrete in special projects, and more. These rocks are sourced from a range of different places, and crushed stone delivery services can then bring them to their new home for their new use.

What Is Crushed Rock Most Often Used For?

Crushed rock is most often used in landscaping and for things like driveways and outdoor spaces. This includes fire pits, loose stone patios, driveways, and landscaping. Crushed rock can also be used for mixing into concrete, used as a base for concrete, and more. Crushed rock can also be used to help with drainage, foundations, and crawlspaces. There is no limit to the uses for crushed rock.
